Golden Week in Japan is one of the few times most Japanese will finally get a chance to kick back and relax. This is the one time of the year where Tokyo will seem like a deserted city….. well as deserted as a bustling metropolis can get. This is mainly because most people leave the city to visit their families or take a vacation to destinations like Hawaii.
Golden Week in is also the best time to go out for comprehensive shopping in Tokyo. Since there are fewer crowds in the major shopping districts, it’s a more enjoyable experience to actually go out and take your time to look at merchandise without having a hundred other people trying to look at the same thing.
I’ve always loved staying in town during Golden Week because it’s a weird and totally enjoyable time for me to explore the city in peace.
